7 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Starting a Business
Starting a business is an exciting journey, but it’s also fraught with challenges. To maximize your chances of success, you need to evaluate key aspects of your idea and approach. Here are seven essential questions every aspiring entrepreneur should ask themselves before taking the leap. (we cover these 7 elements in our Prefounder Catalyst Bootcamps too)
1. Have I Tested My Assumptions?
Every business idea is based on assumptions—about the product, the market, and the customer. Have you validated these assumptions? Testing can take many forms, from surveys to small-scale prototypes, but the goal is to gather evidence that your idea solves a real problem for real people. Skipping this step can lead to costly missteps later.
2. Who Is My Customer, and How Do I Reach Product-Market Fit (PMF)?
Understanding your customer is critical. Who are they, and what problem are they experiencing? Segmenting your audience and tailoring your approach to different phases of the PMF journey—problem-solution fit, product-market fit, and growth—ensures you build something they truly need. Remember, PMF is not a single moment but an evolving process.
3. What Is My Minimum Viable Product (MVP), and How Will I Iterate?
Starting small with an MVP helps you test your concept without overspending. The Agile methodology is your ally here, allowing you to launch quickly, gather feedback, and refine your offering. The faster you iterate, the quicker you learn what works—and what doesn’t.
4. What Makes Me Stand Out in the Competitive Landscape?
Every market has competition, even if it’s indirect. Have you researched your competitors and identified your Unique Value Proposition (UVP)? Your UVP should clearly communicate why customers should choose your business over others. Differentiation is often the key to capturing attention and market share.
5. Is My Business Model Viable, and Do I Understand My Unit Economics?
A great product alone doesn’t guarantee success. How will your business make money? Assessing your business model and understanding unit economics—how much it costs to acquire and serve a customer versus the revenue they generate—will help you build a sustainable operation.
6. Can I Tell a Compelling Story?
Storytelling is a powerful tool in business, whether you’re pitching to investors, attracting customers, or building your brand. What’s the story behind your business? A compelling narrative can help you connect emotionally with your audience and make your idea memorable.
7. Have I Mapped Out My Lean Canvas?
The Lean Canvas is a one-page business plan that helps you distill your idea into its essential elements: problem, solution, customer segments, revenue streams, and more. If you’re still unsure how to structure this, join a live bootcamp to create one with expert guidance—it’s a game-changer for clarifying your vision.
Starting a business is a thrilling endeavor, but preparation is key. By asking yourself these seven questions, you’ll be better equipped to navigate the complexities of entrepreneurship and build something truly impactful.
